Who cares for the environment anyway?
The peace and tranquility of my morning walk is shattered by the noise of a huge truck roaring up the mountain road. Every time I see them, they seem to get big in size and their load even bigger. Dozens pass by every day and I know where these monsters are heading. Deep into the mountains to drop their load at sites where numerous hydro power projects are coming up.
As our hunger for energy grows, every little stream is being seen as a potential site for hydro power projects. The more the merrier, and the bigger the better, seems to be the guiding principle. Armed with modern heavy machinery-JCBs, earth movers, drilling machines- and tons of explosives we have embarked on an ambitious mission to triumph over the world’s highest mountain chain and deface it forever.Who cares for the environment anyway?
One only has to visit a hydro power project site to see how lethal and devastating our modern equipment is and what it is capable of doing. The scars can be seen for miles around. Roads and tunnels are blasted through the mountain with relative ease. The surrounding slopes are dumped with mud and stewed with debris, which will eventually be washed down by the rain into the streams and rivers. Natural courses of streams are being diverted and there is no accounting for the loss of plants and aquatic life. The din and clamor of construction activity and frequent blasting has robbed the hill folks of their peaceful mountain life. It’s a war zone up there.
But all this is vital for the nations progress and to keep the economic wheel moving even if it comes at the cost of the environment.

Sad to see how man is leveraging his superior intellect to claim the world as his own. Ironic, though, is the fact that, in his attempt to fortify his future, he is actually destroying the environment that preserves him. It may sound sadistic, but I pray for a deluge of colossal proportions. That is the only way man’s expansion plans will cease.

Simple hill folks are not even aware what snatching away a river from them would mean.

Most watch the show in awe of the great machines as they claw the mountains of all their beauty.

Hydropower is the buzz word. For whom - most are unsure about.

Himalayan landscape endures it all but nature will sooner or later strike back and there will be a catastrophic moment of reckoning for all to repent about.

It’s true. Nobody seems to be bothered about the loss of peace, greenery and environment, that these modern constructions are causing. It’s sad to see nature and beautiful hills robbed of their natural beauty. What is even more shocking is the absolute apathy of the authorities.

It is difficult to decide whether we should sacrifice nature for the sake of development or abandon development to conserve natural beauty. With scarcity of resources and rising energy and infrastructural demand emanating from a burgeoning population, a developing country has very little alternatives. What we need is sustainable development.

Nature can co-exist with development but at the end of the day, we will have to make to make a few concessions on the nature front if we want development. As Arpita said, sustainable development can mitigate a lot of damage to nature, that would have otherwise occurred. Having said this, nature versus development will always remain a classic case of you can’t have your cake and eat it too. In this context, make that you can have your cake, but certainly cannot eat all of it!
